Lancaster General Hospital: The Light on the Hill

Lancaster County is a rapidly growing region and home to over 500,000 residents that make up its 200,000 family households. As the only trauma center in the area, Lancaster General Hospital’s vision was to serve as a fully-functioning sanctuary in the event of any natural disaster or power interruption—to be known as “The Light on the Hill.” The loss of electricity is inconvenient for anyone but in the case of a medical facility, it can easily be the difference between life and death. This was the rationale behind their comprehensive facilities and capabilities expansion.

Vista Infrastructure Award

The Vista Infrastructure Award is awarded by the American Society for Healthcare Engineering (ASHE) of the American Hospital Association to recognize teamwork, communication, and overall excellence in the development of healthcare environments. Lancaster General Health, in partnership with PWI Engineering, Benchmark Construction, and Cornerstone Design Architects was able to complete the 31,404 sq. ft., $28.4 million in infrastructure expansion while maintaining operations without any interruption. Upon completion, the Energy Center was able to fulfill the growing needs of the community while lowering the cost of utilities, improving their reliability, and reducing its environmental impact. View Full Project Scope

To expand and upgrade the hospital to meet capacity needs while reducing overall costs of operation
Maintaining daily operations during the installation of the new infrastructure without any interruption
A decrease in operational costs and negative environmental impacts while increasing the reliability of utilities

“The Hospital just marked its 125th-anniversary last year, and throughout our history, we have always focused on improving our quality and efficiency. Our new Energy Center not only brings us to new levels of engineering achievement to support this goal but positions us for a future of greater energy reliability and sustainability, at a lower cost.”
