The Carpenter’s Company

Carpenter's Hall Rare Document Library
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

• The Rare Book Library is located on the second floor of Carpenter’s Hall in Independence National Park.
• Analyzed the existing facility for the necessary upgrades needed to store their rare books and manuscripts while maintaining the historic architectural character of the space.
• Installed insulation and vapor barriers behind all the document cases to block out exterior conditions; removed the glass doors to provide ventilation; and operated the air conditioning system on a full-time basis to maintain uniform space conditions.
• An improved HVAC control system was installed which included temperature and humidity sensing devices along with alarms to warn of environmental conditions beyond the desired operating profile.
