New Exhibit Hall and Restoration of Reading Train Shed & Reading Terminal Market

  • A new 1,400,000 square foot convention center/exhibit hall and the renovation of the historically certified Reading Train Shed for use as an entry concourse, ballroom, meeting space as well as the renovation of the historically certified Reading Terminal Market to function as a multi-vendor food and restaurant facility.
  • Energy Use Master Plan resulted in saving the PA Convention Center approximately $2,000,000 in capital costs and $280,000 in annual energy costs.
  • Important design features included the use of the building’s structural mass as a thermal reservoir, thereby reducing the amount of refrigeration capacity that had to be provided in the building’s HVAC systems design. The HVAC systems are tied to an automated building management system, which monitors the temperatures in the structure through the use of embedded sensing devices and adjusts the amount of chilled water needed by the air handling units.
  • The use of cooling load diversification was implemented to accurately reflect the way in which the building is used. Based on occupancy and use patterns, it was possible to shift cooling loads from one portion of the building to another to reflect these use profiles.
  • Multi-function lighting design for convention spaces, meeting rooms, ballrooms, market etc. and phased renovation of 70 food stalls so that the market could continue daily operations during installation.
